A lock screen is a password protected entire website or a page on the website. The lock screen can be customized for your website. I have used the lock screen for a member only page for a club. The page includes minutes from meeting, club contact information, and other information that we want club members to see but not necessarily all visitors to the website. As with all Squarespace websites, all the pages are mobile friendly.

Lock screens can be used several different ways on your website:

  • Under Construction pages. As you are designing a page you either design in the main navigation page and not link the page or password protect.

  • Allow clients to access specific information to private content. (i.e., photographer)

  • Create internal use pages. This would be similar to my club website where only club members can access the information.

You need to choose whether you would like your whole website password protected or a page or pages. Keep in mind that if more than one page is selected that the lock screen will be the same for each page. You cannot customize the screen per page.

As you begin to design the lock screen remember:

  • Passwords are case sensitive so remember to give correct uppercase and lowercase combination.

  • The visitor to the locked website or page will see dots when entering the password. The dots may be longer than the password for safety reasons.

  • After entering the password, the visitor may be asked to log back in as the session will end after four hours.

  • There is only one unique password. It is not possible to create passwords for different people.

First, you need to customize and design your lock screen.

  1. Home Menu > Design > Lock Screen

  2. Choose your layout.

  3. Branding & Text

You can choose to have a logo or text, not both. Add your headline and if you need to add more information there is an area to add additional text in the body. At the bottom you can Click to Display Lock Icon.

  4. Media

You do not have to add a background, but this is where you can add pictures or a video to be in the background. You can add your logo and/or more than one photo or a video.

  5. Style

Now it is time to really customize. You can style the background color and page border. Customize the lock button size, style, shape, and color. Lastly, you can customize the password button style, font, color, and text color.

Setting up a password for one or may pages. Remember if you have more than one page, each page will have the same customized screen.

The lock screen has been extremely helpful for our club. We can keep information all in one place but not available to every visitor/non-club member. Depending on how you use the website the password can be added to the full website or individual pages and looks great on all devices. Good luck!
