Squarespace Basics: How to make your website more visible to search engines

Squarespace makes it easy to add SEO throughout your website.

First, what is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It maximizes the number of visitors to your website.

Why is SEO important?

The information that appears on your website that can be seen by search engines (Google, Safari, etc.) will bring more traffic to your website.

How do you make sure your website has the proper SEO to attract search engines?

When I build a website, I make sure that every picture added to the website is titled with valuable information. With each page I design I make sure to put in as much information as possible, even in the optional fields. This information can be captured so an internet search will give all websites with specific keywords.

What priority is given to each website section in terms being visible to search engines?

  • Site Title

  • SEO Title

  • Page Title

  • Blog Post Title

  • Heading

What keywords do you use that will help make your website visible to search engines?

Think about what people will search for when looking for what you have on your website. What specific keywords will they use that you need to add to bring those visitors in. For example, if you are selling clothing you may want to expand on your description of a shirt instead of just saying shirt. You could describe the color, style, etc. and those specific words used would all be captured by an internet search.

To increase your SEO visibility, try to build the following into your website:

  • Add descriptions to your website and each page on your website.

  • When adding blog posts, products, and gallery images make sure to use categories and tags that accurately describe the information you want to convey.

  • It is also important, when blogging, to make sure you use the words in a blog post that your reader would search by to find the information. Make sure to place important key words in the title of blog posts.

  • If you have a business, make sure to list your business address so location services can also find your business.

Making sure your website has the important keywords that reflect your business or nonprofit is important when trying to bring visitors to your website. Squarespace makes this process much easier as it is built into the Squarespace website. If you need help in building a website, please visit www.maywebedesign.com.
