Squarespace Basics: 404 Page
Every so often a visitor to your page could receive a 404 error page message. By creating a specific 404 Page you can redirect the visitor to a working page.
What is a 404 error?
This code means that your visitor can communicate with the server but not a particular page. It is an http code.
Why would your visitor receive this error?
Your visitor would receive this error if they received an incorrect URL link to a page or content that has been deleted. If you deleted or moved a page the link will give an error, as well.
What is the importance of creating a 404 specific page?
If the visitor has a link that is not correct, they will be directed to any linked or unlinked page you select on your website.
Let’s set up a page:
Home Menu > Design > 404 Page
You will see a drop down box with linked and unlinked pages listed. Choose one of the pages and you are set. Now when a visitor receives an error message they will be redirected to the page you have selected.
By creating a 404 Page to redirect visitors you ensure that they remain on your website and correctly guide them to a working page. As you update and change your website, pages and content may be deleted and moved so visitors would appreciate being redirected to an area that they could continue to navigate. This is an easy fix and great way to ensure visitors receive a pleasant experience on your website. Good luck!
